Quarterly Healthy Lunchbox Ideas

Tired of turkey & cheese sandwiches? Try these healthy sandwich filings on whole-grain bagels, pitas, tortillas, or English muffins!
- Cream cheese and smoked salmon
- Avocado and sprouts
- Tuna or salmon salad with tomato and cucumbers (Sprouts and Whole Foods sell delicious (canned) wild-caught salmon and tuna)
- Mozzarella and tomato
- Chicken salad made with celery, apples, and grapes
- Hummus (so many great flavors to choose from!) with sliced turkey, ham or chicken, sliced cucumber or sprouts
- Egg salad
- Refried beans and cheese
- Use cookie cutters for fun-shaped mini sandwiches
Kids love to experiment! Have them look in the refrigerator and pantry with you. Let them suggest some new lunch or snack ideas. Have them “create” something new that is nutritious and fun to eat. They may surprise you with some great ideas! They will enjoy being part of the process and eating their new “creations” at school!
Nutrition Tips of the Quarter

With cold and flu season approaching; give your immune system a boost!
- Drink lots of water – it oxygenates the blood and flushes out toxins!
- Think Orange! Foods like sweet potatoes, carrots, squash and pumpkin – all great sources of beta-carotene. The body breaks down beta-carotene into vitamin A which helps the immune system.
- Green Tea – Contains EGCG, a powerful antioxidant and anti-cancer agent. Drink it up!
- Broccoli – Great source of vitamins A, C, and E. It is also high in glucosinolates, which stimulate the immune system
- Garlic – Powerful stuff! Effective against bacterial, viral, fungal and parasitic infections. It also enhances the immune system.
- Avoid sugar: It suppresses the immune system.
- REST! Sleep deprivation suppresses your immune system.
